Movie of the Week: Farscape
Ok, I admit this weeks recommendation is not really a movie but i still wont and need people to watch it because it’s that damn good. Now that it’s been re-released on DVD in a much better and more affordable form I can’t recommend it enough.
Farscape is the story of an astronaut [John Crichton] who got shot through a wormhole and shot to a different part of the universe where he meets a group of escaped prisoners and gets hunted by a crazed military commander, or so the opening keeps telling me [the opening them is so cool and gets even more awesome when it switches up in the third and fourth season]. Throughout there travels it is revealed that the show is far more about the character’s story than hard sci-fi.
I remember when this show started way back in 99 and being pissed off that I watch it cause I didn’t have the Sci-Fi Channel. As a result of not having the second tear cable network I was only able to catch 2 or 3 episodes of the first two seasons, but in the third year of the show God had mercy on me and blessed me with the ability to see what quickly became one of my favorite shows ever.
I started really fallowing Farscape a few episodes ti the third season, which if you’ve only seen little bits of the show and vaguely remember the characters the episode I watched was a horrible one to stop on. The main reason I say this not a statement on the quality, I in fact believe the show was one of the few that actually got better as it want along, but instead serialized elements of the show made me really have to pay attention just to catch up. There is a potability that that added to the reason I loved to show so much. The point being that even walking into the show not really knowing what is going on I was inthralled and inspired to keep watching.
While I love the show I will warn anybody who wants to see this truly awesome show goes to wild and interesting places that branch into the absurd but that also allows it to delve into some pretty heavy emotional depths. If you are a lover of science fiction/fantasy than it is your duty to watch this. In one of my opinion this is one the best sci-fi shows in the last decade or two.
